Skype is not new given we are on the present version 5 with many updates in the interim since it appeared. I have used it now since around 2001/2 and it is a pillar of my means to connect with friends, family and business colleagues.
The technical term that describes Skype is VOIP, (Voice Over Internet Protocol), and thus if you have a connection for your PC then you have access to this huge communication hub that is currently handling on average 15-20M users per day with more added on a daily basis. Even those with a connection are oblivious to it's availability and it's even more odd given it is effectively FREE to use across the world or at least at no extra cost unless you make a call to a landline number.
